“I’ve been searching for a music school that truly understands the essence of Indian classical music, and I’m so glad I found Sri Veenavani Music School. As a student who started from scratch, I was amazed by the teachers’ ability to break down complex concepts into simple, understandable pieces.

The school’s curriculum is thoughtfully designed to take you on a journey from the basics to advanced levels, and the teachers are always willing to go the extra mile to ensure you understand and absorb the material. What I appreciate most is the emphasis on ‘manodharma’ (creativity) and encouraging students to develop their own style.

The teachers are not just experts in music but also mentors who guide you through your musical journey. They create a supportive environment that makes you feel comfortable and motivated to learn.

Sri Veenavani Music School is more than just a music school – it’s a community that celebrates the richness of Indian classical music. With 50 years of experience, they’ve perfected the art of teaching and nurturing talent.

If you’re passionate about music and want to learn from the best, look no further than Sri Veenavani Music School. I feel fortunate to be a part of this institution, and I’m confident you will too!” Thnks for the good work….

Manwithoutname

Its a Music school cum open mic, a nice spot for performers and audiences alike. The space isn’t very large, seating is available for just over 50 people but that’s typical for open mic venues and adds to the intimate atmosphere. The crowd is usually decent, and the host keeps things engaging.

Open mics are held here on Saturdays and Sundays. If you’d like to perform, you can either pre-book your ticket in advance or simply book it when you arrive; it’s generally not overcrowded, so getting a spot—whether as a performer or an audience member—isn’t difficult.

On other days, the space functions as a music school where you can learn instruments like drums and guitar. This dual use of the venue makes it feel very creative and welcoming.

Overall, it’s a good place if you’re looking to showcase your talent, enjoy performances in a cozy setting, or even explore learning music.

Punith is a star. As a first timer on drums, I was very apprehensive on how my first session would turn out since i was completely new to the instrument. Punith made me super comfortable and was incredibly patient and motivating with me. He not only taught me the basics in one session – but we actually did a song by the end of it too! Was a lot of fun!

I recently attended a music workshop, and it was a great experience. Having learned the harmonium, I always felt a bit lost when it came to understanding certain aspects of the piano. Punith, our instructor, explained the chords and notes in such a simple and clear way that everything started making sense. Thanks to this workshop, I feel more confident, and I think the next time I try an instrument, it will be much easier for me to understand.

It’s slightly more than a year since I enrolled for the piano classes and it’s been a great experience. John is a fantastic teacher, very knowledgable about music. He constructively encourages his students to get better and better. There’s something new to learn each week.
To all those who are interested to learn music, I would definitely recommend learning at John’s Music Classes.

Rituparna Maji

I did the 4-month Beginner Guitar Course with John.

Pros:
1. Structure: The course starts from scratch, from as basic as understanding the parts of a guitar. It has an optimal mix of theory and practicals
2. Pace: There is a gradual build-up of knowledge across sixteen 2-hour sessions. Every class has a pre-defined agenda and is worth the time. John never fails to stop to answer questions in detail and yet keeps the pace on track
3. Quality of Teaching: John’s crystal clear and engaging teaching style goes well across ages, be it a 6th grader or a 50+ year old (there were both in my batch). John’s ‘live singing’, being a vocals teacher as well, improves the learning and fun quotient significantly
4. Understanding the ‘Why’: While YouTube videos stress on the ‘How’, with John, one gets to learn the ‘Why’. This learning is rare (and is John’s forte and USP). This helps to build a rock solid foundation in learning
5. Rigour: John has a no-nonsense approach of giving homework every week (which he diligently checks). This ensures students practice/ revise notes between classes. He leaves no stone unturned to enable every student to max the learnings
6. Inclusivity: John hand holds the weakest student of the class to get him/ her up to speed, very patiently at that. His focus is more on them than the ones who get it
7. No Delegation: Unlike in other institutes where beginner courses are usually delegated to a less experienced teacher/ senior student, John personally teaches every class despite his decades of teaching experience
8. Flexibility: Given the simultaneous online and offline mode of teaching in every class, one gets to choose either of them in the last minute, without any prior intimation
9. Going Beyond: John’s deep-rooted passion and incredible knowledge makes him share so many fascinating nuggets of information from the world of music. He creates an ambience of awe and respect towards music
10. What Next: In the best interest of music at large, John totally leaves it to the student to decide on what next (beyond the Beginner Course). There is absolutely no push to take up his Intermediate Course

Cons:
1. Nasty traffic, the class being located in the heart of an immensely (and always) busy market area. Parking is a nightmare unless you are on a 2-wheeler
2. Classes are on the expensive side compared to others in Bangalore
3. The course does not link to Trinity exams for guitar

The pros clearly outweigh the cons, making this a MUST DO course.

My children have been learning music (keyboard, guitar, and vocals) from John Sir for over two years now, and I couldn’t have asked for a better mentor for them. His teaching is structured, methodical, and most importantly, filled with patience and encouragement. Despite learning online, the experience has been so seamless that it never feels like a virtual class. The progress they’ve made is incredible, but what truly stands out is how much they enjoy the journey—practicing is no longer a task but something they genuinely look forward to. I am truly grateful to John Sir for making music such a fun and enriching experience. If you’re serious about learning music the right way, look no further than John’s music classes!

Trishan School of Music is a very professionally run institution for those who are truly passionate about learning music and various musical instruments. My 6 year-old kid has been attending the western vocals class as a beginner under Ayushi Ma’am for a few months now and we can notice the difference in him already. Managing small kids as well as adults together in a single class is quite a delicate balancing act and the teacher has been patiently handling them all. Since each batch has a limited number of students only, they all get personalised attention as well. The teachers openly share the expectations and the feedback regarding the progress periodically.

Their admin team who works behind the scenes are quite responsive too and helps address queries and accommodates genuine requests quickly making it a wonderful experience!

I have always wanted to learn Hindustani classical vocal music but never really got the chance. Since childhood, I’ve been listening to old Hindi and Punjabi classical music and enjoying it deeply. When I finally reached out to Sangeet Sadhna, all my apprehensions about whether I could actually learn at this stage just disappeared. The gurus here reassured me that there is no “right age” to begin—if you have interest in music, you should simply start and see where it takes you. That encouragement really helped, and I am thoroughly enjoying my sessions here. Learning has given me a new way to understand music, and it truly feels like a gift to my inner child.

The classes with Vijayranga Sir are especially therapeutic. His perspective on not just music but also life is inspiring. He motivates you to try without the fear of failing, and he encourages peer learning by asking us to reflect on what others might be doing differently. It reminds me of the joy of learning during my school days. I would highly recommend attending the morning classes with him—they are a refreshing way to start the day, offering not only musical growth but also a fresh outlook on life.

Learning at Sangeet Sadhana has been a truly transformative journey for me. What I value most is the way each student is given proper attention, ensuring that no one feels left behind. The school deeply follows the guru-shishya tradition, where music is not just taught but passed on with sincerity, discipline, and love.

I feel especially grateful to my Guru, Vijayranga Sir, whose teaching style is rooted in building strong foundations. His focus on shruti and swar pehchan has reshaped the way I listen to and experience music. Under his guidance, I’ve come to realize that the beauty of music lies not only in performance but in the discipline of truly understanding each note.

This journey at Sangeet Sadhana has helped me channel my focus into something so pure and beautiful, and for that, I remain deeply thankful.

My 5 year old kid joined Sangeet Sadhana few months back. Since then it has been wonderful journey so far. It started with Orientation classes for a month where the basics were introduced and kids were made accustomed to the pedagogy and environment. Just in couple of months, my kid learnt few ragas and started reciting them at home. Also he has become more cheerful and calm.

It has been satisfying to say that he is at the right place at right point of time to gain experience and skills in Hindustani vocals.

I’ve been learning Hindustani classical music here for about 3–4 months now, and I’ve had such a good experience so far. The gurus are incredibly knowledgeable and experienced—you can tell they’ve spent years deeply immersed in this art form. But what really stands out is how humble and down-to-earth they are, even with 25–30 years of experience. Through the classes, I’ve learned a lot about respecting the guru, staying humble in front of the art, and understanding how vast and deep music really is.

Even though it’s a group class, each student gets individual attention. Everyone gets a chance to sing, receive feedback, and learn from their mistakes. The classes are regular and very well conducted.
Highly recommend it to anyone who’s looking to seriously learn Hindustani classical music, no matter what level you’re at.

Discovering Sangeet Sadhana has been one of the most beautiful experiences of my musical journey. From the very first day I stepped into this place, I felt an immediate sense of belonging. I enrolled right away, and every moment since then has been deeply enriching.

The environment here is filled with sincerity, discipline, and a true love for Hindustani classical music. Even though I joined only a short while ago, it already feels like an inseparable part of my life. The teaching is rooted in tradition, yet every class feels fresh and inspiring.

At Sangeet Sadhana, music is not just taught — it is lived and breathed. It’s a place where you don’t just learn compositions, but you grow as an artist and as a person. I feel genuinely grateful to be part of this beautiful community, which has helped me reconnect with myself — my love for music, and so much more.

I’m especially thankful to Swathi ma’am for guiding me back to this path when I needed it most. Her presence and encouragement have not only rekindled my relationship with music but continue to teach me to be a better human being. That, for me, is what truly connects music to the heart — it’s about connection, memories, devotion, and an attachment to something greater — to god, and through that, to one’s guru and gurus.

Some things can really only be felt, not explained. Highly recommended to anyone who wishes to experience the depth and joy of Hindustani classical music.

Even if you love music already, this place will make you fall in love with music all over again. The teachers (guru, as we call them) here are deep into music sadhana and encourages all the students to do the same.

My guru, Vijayaranga sir , as I have seen, has helped all of us beginners to get better understanding and grip of the vocal notes. I really enjoy his classes.

One must be associated with this place to get the essence of bliss. I honestly don’t think I can describe it in words. I would recommend this place to anyone and everyone who wants to learn Hindustani classical vocals.

I have always been passionate about music and singing, and one of the most meaningful gifts my wife gave me was enrolling me in Hindustani music classes at Sangeet Sadhana. It truly felt like a dream come true.

At first, I was both excited and a little nervous about how an online class would work and whether I could really connect with the Gurus and fellow learners. But from the very beginning, Swathi Guru Ji made me feel completely included and comfortable. Her way of teaching carries so much warmth that it almost feels like learning in person.

Sangeet Sadhana also makes it easy for online students to join at convenient times while still maintaining a very high standard of teaching, starting right from the basics. Even when I make mistakes, the Gurus, including Vijaya Ranga Rao Guru Ji, are always encouraging and guide me patiently to improve.

It has only been two months into this journey, but I already feel a strong sense of progress and belonging. I truly believe my Hindustani music journey with Sangeet Sadhana will be a wonderful one, and I’m grateful to be part of this learning experience.

I came in with the intention of making my rhythm guitar playing better, but after joining the institute I was able to explore there was so much more to guitar, and music in general that interests me! I was so enamoured that I ended up joining westerns vocals as well. Been a student here for more than 20 weeks and the journey has been very transformative. I am able to play most of what I have always wanted to and much more! (In addition to that, you see a lot of passion in the teachers here when it comes to their instruments and music in general. I have founds tonnes of new bands from them, some of which have crept up my favourite list surprisingly fast!)

I recently completed the Music Production course at Trill Route School of Contemporary Music, and it has been a transformative experience. Under the mentorship of Suraj Gulvady, I found the confidence and tools to finally express the music that had been within me for years.

The course offers a well-rounded, hands-on approach to composing, orchestration, sound design, recording, mixing, and mastering—all taught in a relaxed, inspiring environment that makes learning both deep and enjoyable.

If I could offer one suggestion, it would be to expand the sound design module further, especially for those of us transitioning from acoustic to electronic soundscapes.

This course isn’t the end—it’s the beginning of a new creative chapter. I look forward to continuing my journey with Trill Route and remain deeply grateful to Suraj and the team for their guidance. Wishing them continued success!

I’ve been a student at Trill Route for about 1.5 years now and have really enjoyed my experience so far. Vishal Das, my vocal teacher, and the school have given me a space to get back to music, engage with it and learn in a way that I hadn’t before. Over the course of the year and a half, I’ve been able to try new styles of music (that I never knew I was even capable of singing), train my voice in a safe and sustainable way and get better. It’s been a joy and I’m excited to keep going and learning!

These include classical music (both Indian and Western), contemporary music, instrumental lessons (such as piano, guitar, and drums), vocal training, and music theory. Many schools also provide specialized programs for composition and songwriting.

How do I choose the right music school for me?

Selecting the right school requires careful consideration. First, define your musical goals. What do you hope to achieve? Then, research schools based on their faculty qualifications, curriculum, performance opportunities, and student reviews. It is also useful to consider the school’s location and cost.

What are the typical costs associated with music education in Bangalore?

Costs vary significantly. Private lessons can range from ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 per hour, or even higher for renowned teachers. Music schools offering structured programs often have monthly fees that can vary from ₹3,000 to ₹15,000, depending on the intensity and duration of the courses. Materials and instrument rental are additional expenses to factor in.

Do music schools in Bangalore offer scholarships or financial aid?

Consistent practice is vital. Most schools recommend at least 30 minutes to an hour of daily practice to see progress. Attending all scheduled lessons is also essential. Look for teachers with relevant degrees or certifications, a demonstrable performance background, and a passion for sharing their knowledge. Consider a trial lesson to assess compatibility.

What age groups are typically catered to by music schools?

Bangalore music schools offer programs for a wide range of ages, from young children (often starting with introductory music classes) to adult learners. Some schools specialize in early childhood music education, while others focus on advanced training for aspiring professionals. It's important to find a school with programs suited to your specific age and experience.

Are there options for online music lessons available?

Due to technological advancements, many music schools now offer online music lessons. This can be a convenient option for individuals who cannot attend in-person classes or prefer the flexibility of learning from home. Be sure to research the school’s online learning platform and ensure the technology is sufficient for effective instruction.

What is the best way to assess the quality of a music school?
